FAQ

Where will we meet?

I am meeting all clients virtually, on a HIPAA-compliant platform called Thera-Link. It offers scheduling and convenient online payment features.

What are your hours?
I work by appointment only, with availability as early as 7 AM. I also see clients on Saturday mornings.
What are your fees?
Fees will be discussed fully in our initial phone consultation.
How do I pay?
You can pay by credit card on the Thera-Link portal, via PayPal or by check.
Do you take my insurance?
Since I have a very targeted practice, I am not on any insurance panels and do not work directly with insurance companies.
Can you help me file on my insurance?

I can provide receipts for my services, along with pertinent information as required by your carrier. You would then submit on your own. Your carrier will consider me to be an out-of-network provider, and you may be reimbursed for a portion of the fee, depending on your specific plan.

A word about fees, insurance, etc. – It is important to recognize that when you undertake the expense of counseling, your first reaction might be, ‘I can’t afford this.’

I understand. It’s important to remember that you can come as often or as seldom as your time and resources allow.

It is also possible that you think you can’t afford it when you can, because the idea of spending money on yourself is something you don’t feel good about. This is something we can look at more closely when we meet. And remember that getting into a better job situation can save you money in all kinds of ways.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you don’t show up or cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, the session will become billable in all but a very small number of special circumstances.

I understand if you wake up with a stomach bug or if your car will not start. What I hope will happen is, if we can reschedule that cancelled appointment during the same work week and you keep it, the cancellation will not be billed.

Do you have forms to complete prior to the first session?
How long are your sessions?

I tailor my approach to a successful outcome for each person.

I sometimes schedule periodic half hour check-ins with existing clients or meet with nonlocal clients for up to three-hour sessions.

I would say that the average length of a single session is an hour to an hour and a half.

How often would we meet?

That is flexible, depending on your sense of urgency, budget, and availability. I try as much as possible to match the rhythm of my clients in scheduling– balancing the need for some time between meetings to do research or reflect on some key insight and the need to maintain momentum.

Initially, I see most clients weekly or every two weeks.

How long does the process take?

Because my services are completely customized to meet individual client needs, the answer to this question depends on your circumstances, availability, and commitment to the time needed to deliver your part of the process.

After our initial meeting, I can give you a much better sense of how long counseling is likely to last. However, as we work together, we may agree that either more or less time is required.

With what ages do you work?
I work with individuals across the lifespan, from high school juniors to post-retirees. Many of my clients are millennials.
How does the career counseling process work?

Many people considering career counseling are not sure what to expect.

Career counseling has some things in common with seeking help from a physician. You visit a physician when you are not feeling quite right, and you are not sure what to do about it.

The medical doctor asks you to describe what is bothering you in your own words and asks you some questions. The doctor may even order some tests to get more information.

Ultimately, you leave with a plan for how to remedy what ails you. You follow the plan, which may include activities such as taking medication or making a change in lifestyle.

Similarly, people seeking professional help with their careers are dissatisfied about some aspect of their work life that they either don’t know how to address or haven’t been able to make sufficient progress on their own.

They realize that working with an expert in helping people make improvements in their work situation could be the most efficient way to achieve a better outcome.

Career counseling begins with an in-depth conversation of your background, needs, and what you are seeking to accomplish in our work together. We will likely talk about how your career fits in with rest of your life.

Using probing questions, we construct a shared understanding of your situation. This discussion may help you to think about your situation in a different way and further clarify your goals.

At the end of that initial meeting, I share some feedback gained through specialized training and years of experience, and we agree on a personalized plan of action.

That action plan will vary, depending upon your needs. Our ongoing conversations typically include inquiry, assessment, reflection, dialogue, and specific homework assignments. Sometimes, diagnostic and educational tools, such as inventories (testing), analytical exercises, role-playing, selective readings, and videos, are used.

If you are looking for a job, we can focus on the strategy and tools needed to implement a winning job search campaign. The common denominators, no matter what we are working on, are high levels of engagement and support every step of the way.

I also recognize that people often find it difficult to implement change. This can occur even when they are excited about the plan and have the best intentions. It is at times like this when working with a career coach can help you get beyond talking about your dissatisfaction and actually taking action toward accomplishing your goals.

We often do this by breaking down complex activities into smaller, more manageable steps; arranging to touch base more frequently to evaluate your progress; or using other techniques to keep you moving forward.

Ultimately, the aim of career counseling is to help you achieve your goals while acquiring the skills, pride, and confidence that can serve as catalysts for future success.
